On Tuesday afternoon, July 9th, members of the community including town staff and council Blowing Rock Chamber employees and board members, representatives from the Blowing Rock TDA as well as members of The Village Foundation board gathered to remember a very special member of the community. Kent Tarbutton, late owner of Chetola Resort, has arguably shaped the heart of this community more than anyone.
After purchasing Chetola in 1997 with his mother, Tarbutton was integral in the creation, and more importantly the adoption, of the Blowing Rock TDA. Over the years, hotel occupancy taxes, derived mostly from tourism, has poured millions into improving our village. Tarbutton was also a valued mentor to up and coming business members and ardent proponent of Blowing Rock. "A rising tide lifts all boats" was his motto and summarized his belief that a community of strong businesses is good for all businesses in that community.
Blowing Rock Village Foundation board member, John Aldridge along with other prominent business members were asked to share their memories of Kent during a brief ceremony. During which, Aldridge reminisced of many profound conversions with Tarbutton, pointing out his ability to know what to say, how to say it and when to say it. Summarizing, Aldridge described Tarbutton as one word.... faithful; faithful to Blowing Rock, faithful to his family and friends and faithful to his religious beliefs.
Near the end of the ceremony, Chamber President, Charles Hardin officially dedicated a tree, a Flame Thrower Redbud, with leaves shaped like hearts and an accompanying bronze plaque to honor the many contributions of Kent Tarbutton.
