New Benches and Bike Racks Proposed to Enhance Public Spaces in Blowing Rock

At a recent Town Council meeting, representatives of The Village Foundation of Blowing Rock presented a proposal to enhance local public spaces through the donation of new benches and bike racks, projects fully funded by community members and local businesses.

Speaking on behalf of the Foundation, Gina Harwood and Charles Harden requested the Town’s acceptance of a gift that includes five benches for the Davant Field area and five bike racks to be installed at key locations throughout Blowing Rock.

The benches are designed to be placed along the paved walking loop at Davant Field, each mounted on a concrete base and accompanied by a small commemorative plaque. The initiative offers families and businesses an opportunity to honor loved ones, celebrate connections to the community, or recognize their organization in a meaningful and lasting way. One of the five benches has already been sponsored, with four remaining.

In addition to the benches, the Foundation has secured donors for five bike racks, each capable of holding up to seven bicycles. These racks are planned for installation at several locations, including Davant Field, Mayview Park, Blowing Rock School, and other in-town sites identified in coordination with local officials.

The project was developed in collaboration with Parks and Recreation leadership and has received support from relevant advisory groups. The addition of bike racks addresses a growing need in the community, particularly as more residents and visitors rely on bicycles and e-bikes to navigate town.

During the presentation, Harwood shared a recent anecdote illustrating the need: a child’s bicycle left unattended in town was picked up by police officers who believed it to be lost, highlighting the lack of secure places for bike parking.

Importantly, the Foundation noted that the installations would come at no cost to the Town, with all expenses covered through private donations.

Following the presentation, Town Council unanimously approved the request.
